Social Media Plan #2 – Platform

“All roads lead to Rome” ~Proverb

Now that you’re clear on your Purpose for being on social media, let’s talk about your social media Platform and how will you integrate all your profiles together to cast the widest net and draw your best prospects into your lead funnel.

Your Social Media Platform is the actual communication channel or channels you use to listen, engage and share your message with the world.

Your Platform starts with your profiles: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn & YouTube are what I call “primary”social networking platforms.

Hootsuite is a fantastic tool for integrating these primary profiles together so you can easily monitor and engage with your Tribe.

There are “secondary” and “tertiary” social media profiles as well. These include social bookmarking sites and some profiles you will never get a single follower on, but can factor greatly into SEO strategies. Check out Ping.fm to see what I mean.

Your blog is the core of your Platform.

You can be on dozens of social media sites, but unless you have your blog set up to syndicate content and draw people deeper into your marketing funnel, you will never make much money on social media.

Your Platform should be set up to spread information quickly and easily from your blog to all your social media profiles. And just like the proverb states, all the places your content syndicates to should swiftly bring your readers back to your blog where they can find out more about you by opting in to your email list.

That’s the last piece of your Platform puzzle. An auto-responder or CRM system like Aweber, GetResponse, Constant Contact or Infusionsoft will help you stay connected to your prospects in a way that social media simply can’t.

Social media profiles are ephemeral. They will be gone in the blink of an eye. The principles of direct-response marketing, however, will endure. And so will email.

What email system are you using, and what are you offering your social media Tribe to entice them to deeper their relationship with you by entering their email?

  • Keith - I've heard good things about Mail Chimp, too ;-) For me, deliverability is top priority, so I choose Aweber, but it's important to find something that works for you both in terms of functionality and usability.

Brazen Careerist is competing in the "LinkedIn" space, but appears to be more for employee types than entrepreneurs. It looks fresh, and has a great concept, but whether it will go viral and play a key role in professional networking is for time to tell. I'd recommend using it if you're ambitious about your career, along with LinkedIn, and continue to keep them updated. You never know who you'll be able to connect with there, and how it will help you until you use it. The nice thing is they are already using Facebook Connect, which means you can probably set up your profile, and keep fresh content on their through syndication from your primary social networks - similar to the way LinkedIn syndicates your Twitter stream. I like it - go with it and keep me posted!

MailChimp is another good one. I have used Constant Contact but it sort of feels kinda of clunky compared to MailChimp. Plus their mascot is a monkey! Who wouldn't trust a monkey delivering their mail?

Have you heard of Brazen Careerist as a primary (or maybe it would fall under secondary/tertiary) social media profile? I have heard from a few people that they predict it to to grow in upcoming years. I'm not so sure, but I would like to hear what you think about it.
